wang xi suo zao zhu e ye, jie you wu shi tan chen chi,
cong shen yu yi zhi suo sheng, yi qie wo jin jie chan hui.

The misdeeds I have committed in the past,
All stem from beginningless greed, anger, and ignorance.
They arise from my actions, speech, and thoughts,
For all of these, I now repent completely.
The Verse of Repentance shines as a radiant jewel within the vast and magnificent cosmos of the Avatamsaka Sutra. Found in the Fortieth Scroll of the Chapter on the Practices and Vows of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, it was translated into Chinese by the renowned Tang Dynasty monk Prajña.
This verse is one of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva’s Ten Great Vows, serving as an enduring beacon of compassion that guides practitioners back to their pure and original nature. In these few brief lines, there is both a reflection on past wrongs and a promise to live virtuously in the future. Like a mirror, it reflects the depths of one’s heart, leaving no shadow unseen.
Reciting this verse is not only the beginning of a spiritual journey but also a profound cleansing of the soul—a passage from confusion to clarity, from darkness to light.
Benefits of Reciting the Verse of Repentance:
Purifies the mind, reduces afflictions, and resolves inner anxiety and unease.
Removes karmic obstacles from the past, paving the way for future spiritual progress.
